What do a newborn baby photographer and a mom have in common with Elsa?

We’re all learning to let it go.

“Let it go, Let it go.” Big brother doesn’t want to be in the photos, and that’s OK!

“Let it go, let it go, that perfect girl is gone
Here I stand, in the light of day, let the storm rage on
The cold never bothered me anyway!”

Like a lot of women these days, I tend to get overwhelmed with the tsunami-sized to-do list coming at me every morning. (Being a newborn baby photographer has it’s challenges!) That, combined with a tendency to be a “pleaser”, sometimes leaves me drained and bewildered at the pace of my life.

But lately, it’s the tiniest little people that are helping me to come out of the weeds and focus on the BIG picture. Recently, I photographed a family in Norwalk with an energetic 19-month old boy and a newborn. Perfect scenario for feeling overwhelmed and crazy with trying to be perfect all the time, right?

As we were clearing a space in the family room/toy zone to set up for the shoot, I realized that this mom got it. She was calm and focused. Not focused on the phone, and the mess, and the toddler buzzing around, but focused on capturing photos of the sweet, gentle new baby that just entered her life.

She knows how quickly he’ll transform and how fleeting these days are. She knows that with a toddler and a week-old baby, you need a newborn baby photographer that can embrace the chaos and still focus on the love and baby perfection.

When I first got to the house, mom told me that big brother probably wouldn’t want to be in photos with the baby, and that was fine. We tried, and sure enough, he just was NOT into it. Let it go, I heard in the back of my head. And, we did.

newborn photos at home

This little guy seems to be enjoying his first photo session at home.

As I was packing up the last of my equipment and getting ready to go, who do you was suddenly VERY interested in getting his photo taken? Yup, big brother came around, sat in his new beach chair and worked it like Beyonce. Also, because he was so comfy at home, with all his stuff around.

He couldn’t have been cuter or more cooperative, and we got some amazing photos of him with big big smiles. (Lucky I kept my camera out!)

Work it! Siblings will love photos at home. (Eventually.)

All because Mom stayed focused on what was really important (her happy and sleepy newborn) and let it go. Another lesson in newborn photography learned from the babies themselves.
