I’ve been photographing this little boy and his family for many years and, honestly, he’s one of my toughest customers.
Don’t get me wrong, he’s an excellent little boy—fun and smart and cute—but, he’s a little boy. And sometimes they just can’t act naturally in front of a camera. It’s not that they don’t want to, it’s just is not working.
Yup, he’s not thrilled with the situation here… See the smile attempt?

The moment I see this is happening, we break it up. With a joke or a song or a fart joke… Or we just MOVE ON.
Sometimes we have to go right to stinky toes and fart jokes to loosen up.
A little help from our friends
Since this little boy’s sister is ALWAYS naturally at ease in photo sessions, she is my best tool in getting her brother to forget about the camera. They have so much fun, it’s easy to put them together in any situation and see them both light up.
Siblings always keep things loose and moving along.
And, of course, a good tickle session from Dad goes a long way to losing the self-conscious grin.

A natural smile is going to happen when kids are relaxed and not thinking about posing for the camera. Here, my assistant got him talking about what he loves, and we were able to capture the most genuine smile of the day.
